Downtown Historic District

Downtown Fernandina Beach Historic District is unlike any other place in Florida – a charming “Old Florida” seaport village with a colorful fusion of Victorian-era architecture, historic homes, must-visit dining destinations, eclectic arts and culture venues, and antique shops filled with treasures.

Encompassing approximately 1,500 acres and spread over more than 50 blocks, Fernandina Beach Historic District was officially included on the National Register as a US historic district on July 20, 1973. It is home to several significant structures such as the Nassau County Courthouse, the Train Depot, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Public School No.1, the Waas House, the Tabby House, and many more.

The importance of the Historic District was considered by Fernandina Beach as a vital component in the preservation of the city’s heritage. City officials passed a historic preservation ordinance in 1975 in an effort to establish local boundaries and guidelines to protect its historic buildings.
